The first Baptist church in New Mexico was started in Socorro by James Milton Shaw in 1851. During the civil war it went dormant. The church has been reorganized at least two times since and First Baptist Church of Socorro is a strong church today. The longest continuous church is First Baptist Church of Las Vegas. It was started by a layman, Homer Newberry, in 1880. He later helped to start First Baptist Church Albuquerque and became its first pastor. Throughout the years we have seen as many as 800 churches started in New Mexico. However, we have a ratio of one church for every 6,500 people and have at least 69 communities with a population of over 500 without a Baptist church. Our prayer is to start 100 new disciple-making churches by 2025. Is God leading you to plant one of those?
